Silver Lake – Serbian sea in 2020

Silver Lake is one of the most beautiful lakes in Serbia. Without exaggeration! You can only imagine what a lake with such a pretty name looks like. It originates from the specific glow and sparks that the water receives in the afternoon during the summer. In those moments the surface of the lake looks like pure silver. This artificial lake was formed in order to protect the Danube from groundwater and flooding in 1971. Today it is one of the most beloved tourist places in Serbia. The lake provides magnificent possibilities for entertainment, sports, enjoying wonderful landscapes, but also for escaping the modern-day city rush. Keep reading to find out what it offers!

Silver lake (in Serbian Srebrno jezero) is one of the best-known holiday resorts in Serbia. It is located on the right bank of the Danube, 2 km from a town and municipality Veliko Gradiste, and 110 km east from Belgrade. It is 14 km long, with an average width of water of 300m and 3m depth. However, its significance lays mostly in constant accumulation and provision of fresh water, thanks to the water pumps which maintain the water level. What characterizes this lake is its irregular arch shape.

As a result of the lake’s growing popularity, it has been advertised as the Serbian sea, since Serbia is landlocked. Within the vicinity are various historical attractions such as the fortresses of Ram and Golubac and the Djerdap National Park, which can make a stay at this lake even more appealing. If there is a need for that since Silver Lake itself offers too many leisure opportunities.

Enjoy as if you were at the seaside

The first thing that will catch your attention is that this place gives the vibe of the seaside. There are several sandy beaches where the entrance is free. All of them are beautiful and on some, you can rent deck chairs and parasols. When at some point you get tired of swimming and sunbathing, you can start exploring the surroundings. In order for you to get to know the lake better and see all its beauties from a different angle, we suggest renting pedal and sailing boats here.

If, on the other hand, the sand does not suit you, and you would rather lie on gravel or grass, you can do that as well. All you need to do is bring your towel, find an adequate spot, and enjoy.

Silver Lake’s shore became a promenade dotted with restaurants and modern cafes overlooking the lake. There you can try various Serbian specialties, meat, freshly prepared fish, seafood and pour it all with a glass of some good wine. The prices of food and drinks are not particularly expensive in comparison to other parts of Serbia. In many restaurants on the shores of the lake, you can enjoy a rich gastronomic offer at very reasonable prices.

The nightlife is so diverse. In some bars, such as the restaurant Sidro, you can enjoy Serbian traditional drinks while listening to tamburica (instrument resembling the mandolin and guitar). In others like the Copacabana pub,  fans of beer and rock-pop hits can enjoy. The young ones have the opportunity to dance to the modern music played by DJs at the Beach Bar until the early morning hours.

Types of accommodation on Silver Lake

Do you want to try what it is like to sleep in a trailer? Are you maybe more fond of a more luxurious vacation? You have a choice.

The lakeside campsite is the largest and one of the oldest car camping parks in Serbia. It has an attractive location, along the shores, and a lot of guests use it every year. There you can station or rent a caravan or rent a place for a tent.  Its total capacity is 200 camping pitches, of which 150 are already stationed. It has all the equipment you need- sinks for washing dishes, clean toilets, and a tidy part with showers.

The lake is known for its tourist complex called the Silver Lake Resort. Here, you can enjoy sports, tourist, and recreational activities.

In addition to the above, there are various accommodation facilities around the lake. You can look for facilities with a private pool and spa, but also those who have a private dock for swimming in the lake. You also have apartments in private villas or cottages available.

Recreational activities for active vacation

Silver Lake has a highly developed sports and recreation center which includes an indoor hall, open tennis courts, open basketball courts, a beach volleyball court, and around 12 mini-golf courses. Water sports enthusiasts will manage to find something for themselves, too. There is a water polo area on the lake, and boat, canoes, and kayaks you can rent.

Do you want to ride a bike while you are visiting? No problem! The nice bike trail goes along the river and is perfect for this occasion. Enjoy your morning route around the lake while the sun is coming out. It is useful to know that famous Eurovelo 6 bike trail passes near the lake. This European bike path is 3,653 km long and it connects the Atlantic coast with the Black Sea.

Another thing that definitely impacted the image of the Silver Lake is that a famous Serbian basketball player, Milos Teodosic, opened his TEO4 Basketball Camp here. Perhaps upon your visit, you might get a chance to even meet him.

What else can you do on the Silver Lake?

What else A definite favorite of all visitors is the Aqua Park, with a large pool complex, where you can spend the whole day. It consists of five pools of different depths, including a children’s pool, and several water slides, which can provide great fun. There is also a bar with a rich offer, locker rooms, and toilets, including the one for the needs of people with disabilities.

The beauty, tradition, experience in tourism, water sports, adventure, fun, family vacation, laughter, cultural events, sights- these are the words that describe staying on the shores of this favorite lake in our country.
