Vrelo Mlave – getting there

Vrelo is a Serbian word for the spring – river source, and Mlava is a river in East Serbia and one of the tributaries of the Danube. So, Vrelo Mlave simply means the Mlava Spring. It is located very close to the village Žagubica, in the heart of the mysterious Homolje Mountains. It is 170 km away from Belgrade, and 170 km from Niš, in an area full of natural sights and small but beautiful Serbian towns.

Vrelo Mlave is, without any doubt, a place of immense natural beauty. The river flows out of a large karst spring, and the water is crystal clear. The round-shaped spring is surrounded by dense forest, and there are numerous hiking and biking trails in the area. Vrelo Mlave is also a great place for picnics, fishing, and enjoying the fresh air and pristine nature. The best time to come is early in the morning or late in the afternoon. The sun is not too strong and the tourists are sparse.

The river spring has around 25 meters in diameter. It is over 80 meters deep and due to the cold temperatures all year round, we do not recommend swimming. However, if you do not mind the temperature of around 10°C, feel free to carefully dip in.

The village of Žagubica is a typical Serbian village, with friendly people and a relaxed atmosphere. There are several traditional restaurants in the village, serving delicious local food. The people are friendly and welcoming and the village is also home to a number of small shops and businesses. Whether you want to try some traditional Serbian food, or just wander around the shops for a couple of hours, you’ll be sure to find something to suit your taste.
