Surviving hot temperatures in Belgrade

Located in south-east Europe, on two rivers, Belgrade has a humid subtropical climate. It means that here, summer brings quite hot temperatures. In combination with humidity, high UV Index, and concrete in the city, the temperature can feel much higher than it really is.

Of course, we love summer! And in Belgrade, people tend to be very active around the clock. We are lucky to live in the city which offers a wide variety of activities for every season. With this in mind, we are going to give you some health tips and suggest the activities you can perform safely and comfortably. In particular, we took into consideration the current coronavirus situation. Hence, we emphasize the importance of crowd avoidance, social distancing, and following safety measures.

Health tips for hot temperatures

First and foremost, drink plenty of water! It is a good idea to bring the water bottle with yourself. Kiosks are all around the city and tourist attractions, so you can easily buy cold water or other refreshing beverage there. There are even some taps around the city, and water is perfectly safe to drink.

Pace your activity! Try to avoid any strenuous activity in the middle of the day, when the sun is the strongest. Make frequent breaks and refresh yourself. Have a cold drink in a cafe, or just sit in the shade until you cool down. Early mornings and late evenings are the best periods for exercising.

Wear loose, lightweight, and light-colored clothing. It will make you feel more comfortable and you will sweat less. Equally important – use sunscreen! The sun can be very strong and the UV index can be high.

Monitor your condition. If you feel any signs of heat exhaustion or dehydration (nausea, dizziness, headache, etc), stop your activity, cool off, and drink some water.

Beware of sudden weather changes and thunderstorms. This is a very typical feature of Belgrade climate in the summer. High humidity and hot temperatures are causing the warm, moist air to rise into the atmosphere. The thunderstorm with lightning, rain, or hail can happen quickly. In that case, seek immediate shelter. For the full weather forecast, check the Accuweather.

Last but not least, wear a facemask! In Serbia, they are mandatory indoors at all times, and outdoors if proper social distancing can’t be maintained.
